Slipcases for paperbacks were nothing new when this 2-book set was released by Dell in 1965 (with a reissue in 1971). The oddity here is that usually, something ... anything ... would grace the books' wrappers in the form of cover art, or at least as a graphic. With this set, the books were plain black, but sported an extremely intricate illustration wrapping around the entire slipcase. (Click a picture for a better view.)
